LG Patents A Smartphone Case With A Flexible Display

LG and Samsung maintain a pretty fierce rivalry, which is unsurprising given that both companies are huge in Korea, and that both of them pretty much compete in the same industries. This is why it was a bit surprising that following Samsung’s announcement of the Galaxy Fold, LG did not follow suit with something similar of their own.

Instead, LG has opted to launch the LG G8x ThinQ which was sold with an optional detachable display that kind of turned the phone into a foldable phone of sorts. It’s not quite the same thing, but that could change in the future, according to a patent discovered by LetsGoDigital. The publication has come across a patent in which it shows LG is working on a smartphone case that comes with a flexible display.

As you can see in the image above, the phone will sit inside of the case, where the flexible display will wraps around the outer part of the cover. There are several advantages to such a design. One of them being that should the case ever get damaged, all users need to do is replace it.

This is versus the current design of foldable display smartphones where it might be a much more expensive process to replace it in the event of damage. It also gives users the option of not using the flexible display if they’d rather not. That being said, we’re not sure if there are plans to ever make this a reality, so try not to get your hopes up just yet.
