It feels like Apple’s decision to go with mini LEDs could be shortlived. The company launched a refreshed iPad Pro earlier this year that featured the use of the display technology, but it seems that OLED could have always been Apple’s end-game. This is according to a report from The Elec who claims that in 2022, Apple might launch a new 10.8-inch iPad Air with an OLED display.
Assuming that the report is accurate, it does seem a bit strange that Apple would choose to use OLED instead of mini LED given that they’ve already started using the technology. However, the report goes on to claim that the iPad Air will be the first to use OLED and that the next OLED tablet is expected in the following year, in 2023, after which the company reportedly has multiple OLED iPads planned.
This is actually not the first time we’ve heard rumors about the use of OLEDs in iPads. There was a report from last month about Apple potentially switching to OLEDs next year, but the report did not specify which models, but this report is now claiming that it will be the iPad Air. It is possible that maybe Apple will choose to keep mini LED exclusive to the iPad Pro, but since these are just rumors (for now), it’s probably best to take it with a grain of salt.
