You Can Now Protect Your Twitter Account With Security Keys

Twitter, like most online services these days, supports 2FA. While 2FA is a more secure method of logging in compared to just the regular username and password combination, it isn’t a perfect system. There is always a slight chance of the 2FA code being intercepted, or if someone has stolen your phone, they could receive the code as well.

If you prefer a more physical way of protecting your online accounts, Twitter has recently announced that their platform will now support security keys as a 2FA login method. For those unfamiliar, security keys are essentially small physical devices that when plugged into a computer or a phone, will authenticate you meaning that as long as the attacker doesn’t have access to your key, they won’t be able to log into your accounts even if they know the login name and password.

According to Twitter, “Security keys offer the strongest protection for your Twitter account because they have built-in protections to ensure that even if a key is used on a phishing site, the information shared can’t be used to access your account. They use the FIDO and WebAuthn security standards to transfer the burden of protecting against phishing attempts from a human to a hardware device.”

Twitter said that support for security keys are now being rolled out to its iOS and Android app and also to the web version of Twitter, so keep an eye out for it if this is something you think you might be able to benefit from.
