One of the interesting features we’ve seen come to smartphone cameras is a greater degree of optical zoom. In the past, zooming in with your smartphone usually comes in the form of digital zoom where it’s more like a crop of the image, which is why sometimes you lose the details when you zoom in.
However, in the past few years, we’ve seen efforts from the likes of Huawei where they’ve come up with some pretty impressive zoom features, and this is apparently an avenue that Apple is looking into for future iPhones. This is according to a report from Korea IT News who claims that Apple is apparently looking for suppliers to possibly supply them with periscope cameras for future iPhones.
What these cameras will do is that they will give iPhones even more zoom than it can do at the moment. Right now, the iPhone 12 Pro Max is capped out at 5x optical zoom, and 12x digital zoom, but with the inclusion of a periscope camera, it could push the zoom distance even further.
The added benefit of using a periscope camera is that because the camera is “folded”, it will allow Apple to increase the zoom without having to make the phone or the camera modules thicker. It will be interesting to see if this rumor pans out, and more importantly how Apple plans to implement it, so until we hear from the company officially, take it with a grain of salt.
