Facebook’s Smart Glasses Will Be Made By Ray-Ban

Back in 2019, it was rumored that Facebook was looking to develop its own pair of smart glasses and that they might be working with Ray-Ban on them. It turns out that the rumors were right because during Facebook’s earnings call held this week, the company’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg confirmed as much.

According to Zuckerberg’s statement during the earnings call, he was quoted as saying, “Looking ahead here, the next product release will be the launch of our first smart glasses from Ray-Ban in partnership with EssilorLuxottica. The glasses have their iconic form factor, and they let you do some pretty neat things.”

At this point in time, there is still little to nothing known about Facebook’s smart glasses. Zuckerberg’s statements are even more vague, although as The Verge notes, Facebook had previously stated that the glasses will not have an integrated display so maybe we can rule out augmented reality, although we’re not sure what the appeal would be then.

In recent years we’ve seen some companies attempt to fill the void that Google left when they discontinued Google Glass. Snap launched its Spectacles and recently, Amazon has also tried their hand with the Echo Frames. Even Apple is rumored to be working on their own pair of smart glasses that could debut in the next few years.
