OnePlus Will Soon Let Users Disable Throttling

A few weeks ago, it was reported that OnePlus had been found to be throttling the performance of some apps. The company claimed that this was done in the name of battery saving, although we’re sure that users would like to at least be informed about it and also given the option to make the choice themselves.

The good news is that OnePlus will be changing that in OxygenOS 12, which is the company’s next major update for their phones. Speaking to Android Police, OnePlus said, “However, given the clear feedback from users and media, our R&D team is currently working to add an option to let users turn on/off this optimized mode and have better control over the performance of their phones. We’re targeting to have this solution ready with one of the first builds of OxygenOS 12.”

It is unclear how this option will be presented to users, but as Android Police notes, it will probably come in the form of a toggle, kind of like how Apple handled their whole batterygate scandal where they eventually released an update for iOS that let users toggle on or off the throttling feature.

Since this will be part of the OxygenOS 12 update, which is based on Android 12, we imagine that it will probably be released later this year. This means that for now and until the update is released, it looks like OnePlus users will just have to put up with the throttling.
