Last week, Valve announced the Steam Deck. This is basically a PC miniaturized into a handheld console form factor that will let gamers play PC games while on the go. It is a novel idea but also one that holds a lot of potential. It is priced at $399 and it is expected to go on sale by the end of the year.
However, it seems even ahead of the console’s release, scalpers are already listing pre-orders for the Steam Deck on platforms like eBay where they have already hiked the prices up to as much as $5,000 in some cases. It’s kind of ridiculous because the console isn’t even available yet, so what you’re buying is basically a pre-order of a pre-order, and that’s the best case scenario. The worst case scenario is that this is a scam and you’re out $5,000.
That being said, we’re not sure what the availability situation will be like when the console is launched. It is still kind of unproven even though the concept is promising, so for all we know, it might not sell very well at launch, or it could sell like hotcakes in which then these scalpers will definitely have a market that they can tap into.
Either way, it’s probably a better idea to just wait and see. You might even want to wait for it to be released and read/watch reviews before you make your decision, so don’t go giving your money to these scalpers just yet.
