Motorola RAZR Plus, A Flip-style Phone With A Large Cover Screen, The Best Galaxy Flip 4 Competitor?

Last week, Motorola launched two new foldable, the new Razr and the Razr Plus (official), both reminiscent of the iconic Razr V3 clamshell introduced in 2004 and rebooted in 2019 as a modern foldable smartphone.

The highlight of the RAZR Plus is its large 3.6-inch 144 Hz pOLED cover screen, a significant competitive advantage over its nemesis, the Samsung Galaxy Flip 4 (1.9-inch cover screen).

The previous Motorola Razr 2022 launched in China in 2022, and this time both phones are coming to the U.S., but only the Razr Plus will be available on June 23rd for $999.

The sub-thousand price point for a flip-style phone with such a large external second display is a huge deal! For comparison, the Samsung Galaxy Flip 4, featuring the same SoC and an uber-small cover screen, launched last August at $999.99. Motorola streamlined the design even more since the 2022 edition: now the angular edge at the bottom, reminiscent of the iconic Razr’s chin, is all gone.

I love foldable phones, especially the smaller flip-style ones, as the internal display is always protected whether I carry them in my purse or attached around my neck, and I am so excited that Motorola, one of the pioneers of this form factor, is finally coming back with a device packed with the most critical high-end features.

The Motorola Razr Plus (Motorola Razr 40 Ultra outside the U.S.) boasts a Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 SoC (last year’s Qualcomm flagship) with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. The 3,800 mAh battery can be charged at 30W power (wired) or a 5W wirelessly.

Thanks to the Qualcomm SoC, the RAZR Plus supports up to a 165 Hz refresh rate for its main 6.9-inch FHD+ pOLED screen with a 1400 NITs peak brightness. The IP52 rating protects the device only from splashes and light rain.

The rear camera system features a 12MP f/1.5 primary camera with OIS and a 13MP f/2.2 ultrawide/macro shooter. Both the Razr Plus and the Razr offer the same 32MP selfie camera.

Main 12MP (f/1.5, 1.4μm) | OIS
Wide 13MP (f/2.2, 1.12μm) | FOV 108°
